This post is part two of my interview with Carol Tuttle, Master Energy Therapist, Author and Spiritual Teacher. If you read part one of the interview, you’ll remember that Carol has overcome bulimia and many other life challenges — reminding us that we too can recover — that we have the power to create the lives we want! That’s the focus of this post.
Our Ability to Create What We Want
When I asked Carol what role our minds played in creating what we want, she described the different brainwaves we all have: beta, alpha, theta and delta. At each of these levels, we have a lot of defenses. The beta level (mental activity) is what allows us to get things done in our life – it is analytical, skeptical. Healing happens when we go beyond our mental or thought states – to the alpha (resting, reflecting, meditating), theta (daydreaming) and delta (REM sleep) levels.
We all have a God-given state of healing, Carol says, so it doesn’t have to be a cognitive process. We can tap into our subconscious mind to allow healing to function. As Carol said, when our bodies are functioning at preferred levels, we don’t have to tell ourselves to digest food or fight bacteria – it happens automatically. Our healing programming is the same, we just need to allow it. Carol also said that while this power of healing is real and available to all of us — we could sabotage it — disrupt it — if we continue to focus on negative thought patterns.
Power of Mind & Recovery From Addiction
Power of mind comes into play when you use your mind to be proactive in thought and believe in your ability to change — to reform your thoughts. The mind is critical — you can learn how to think in the affirmative, Carol says, however, a much bigger system wants to be engaged. The left-brain (analytical, logical thought) can be sabotaging, unless a positive mindset supports it. Carol teaches clients how to create a new script for themselves, so they can attract this whole system of change into their lives.
What Happens When We Focus Obsessively On Weight?
In Carol’s experience, an obsessive focus on weight is related to fear of something else coming along that will be worse. Typically, there is an underlying belief that you have to suffer – and you may be more comfortable with the “devil you know.” The fear is that something worse will show up if the issue of weight went away.
In working with clients, Carol gets to the heart of this fear by asking questions like:
- If you didn’t spend all your energy focusing on food and weight, what would you feel that you don’t want to feel?
- What would you feel instead?
- What if this was gone from your life?
For women, she has found that there is something about femininity or sexuality that’s been wounded. For men, it could be sexuality or avoiding responsibility. For bulimia, she has found that it relates to purging of pain, wanting to throw something out, get rid of it, a release. For binge eating, it’s about creating a stuffed feeling, a distraction. She reinforced what we’ve all heard about eating disorders — it’s a control issue. The clearing session on her website, The Carol Tuttle Healing Center, covers all of these patterns for anorexia and bulimia.
How To Find Our Life Purpose
Carol’s approach is to clear and create – so we become creators of a joyful life. She has seen life purpose evolving from energy clearing work – because as people clear, they find out what they what to create. When you release people from lies and emotions, she says, their true purpose starts to come through. Carol reminded me that we are all creators – although perhaps right now, we are accidental creators — creating what we don’t want. We have the power to be conscious creators.
Energy Healing & Recovery
According to Carol, in order to move toward and maintain recovery, we must clear the fears of relapse. You can start where you are right now — and learn to use the simple tools of energy clearing. As a first step, you can go to Carol’s Website – here you will find free resources on how to do EFT.
In my blog, we have all addressed our triggers – they happen before, during and after recovery. Carol says we need to clear that energy when triggered — when our buttons are pushed. If it’s not addressed, it will be driven towards dysfunctional behavior or projected on a person. Carol suggests we be proactive – she encourages us to tap on a daily basis. It takes so little time and there are so many situations in a day that we can do it effortlessly. Carol herself does EFT every day — it’s like brushing her teeth, which is why she came up with the great phrase – “energy hygiene” – the more you do it, the more well-being you sustain.
Using Negative Statements In EFT?
If any of you have heard of or tried EFT, you’ll know that some of the tapping is done with negative statements, before moving to the positive statements. Knowing what we do about law of attraction, I was always confused about why we’d want to tap using negative statements. Carol explained that the negative statement is first because we all need validation for our pain and suffering.
The negative statement gives voice and recognition to: “This is my experience. This is the human condition.” Once validated, we are able to let something go and allow ourselves to come back to harmony. Carol used the example of 12 steps – the cornerstone is validation of pain. Most often, the pain is unseen and ignored by our family systems. Recognition is healing, but not completely healing. As a veteran of 12- step work, it had a place in Carol’s life. The danger, she says, is that it can feel like healing, but you have to keep your wounds in order to stay there and continue getting the validation. This might be the cycle of stopping the behavior, but not truly moving beyond the addiction. Energy clearing allows you to validate your pain AND move beyond it – release it.
EFT for Eating Disorders
Excited to try Carol’s online clearings and courses, I signed up for The Carol Tuttle Healing Center, and took the introduction to EFT course. Watching the video online, along with the presentation, allowed me to easily learn how to do EFT myself. Then I did Carol’s clearing session on eating disorders. After doing both sessions, I felt a sense of uplifting energy – it really did feel like the energy had moved all over my body! As I was tapping in the clearing session, I really felt that Carol had selected the words that were deeply ingrained within my conditioning around bulimia.
This is where her expertise as an energy healer – plus her experience in recovering from bulimia – comes together in an accurate understanding of our core emotions. I had never before understood the value of EFT – and now I really do – so I’m grateful to Carol for providing me with an opportunity to try it for myself! Carol told me that I could even use EFT to tap in positive affirmations – so if I had nothing I was trying to clear, I could use EFT to effectively create more positive patterns in my life.
Final Wisdom from Carol – Having Been There & Back
While your experiences may have provoked a sense of worthlessness and defeat — you are not your experience. The truth of who you are is infinitely valuable. Awareness of your true self and life purpose is a reverently spiritual thing.
Carol can say this with conviction because she had her own issues of depression, sexual abuse and bulimia. She didn’t have an awareness of her own self-worth, but all of this shifted when she had children. She began to understand the level of dysfunction parents were capable of passing on to their children. Seeing beyond herself, she realized the worth of her children – and she was committed to being a healthy parent for their sake. This is when she set out to transform her own life. She now has 5 children between the ages of 18 and 25. In transforming her own life, she created a thriving marriage and children who know their self-worth.
I was struck by Carol’s description of how she awoke from her core emotions and cleared her own energy – thus shifting the experiences of her loved ones. She reinforced for me that it is of utmost importance to care for ourselves, so that we have the positive energy to care for others. It was Carol’s children that helped her awaken to this truth – perhaps you will see the same in your own life. If you don’t have children, what do you see in your own life that you can commit to – what will awaken you to commit to your own self-worth?
Commitment Is The Key
As Carol says, this commitment is the key – it’s what allows you to pull yourself back up and do it again – and again. Carol expressed gratitude for her marriage and family as we ended the interview. She is passionate about healing adults because children deserve to know their self-worth – so they don’t have to wait until they are 45 years old to heal.
I am grateful for having had the opportunity to spend time with Carol – just talking with her raised my vibration for days! I am excited to continue with my online clearings and start using her EFT techniques to transform my life – moving closer to my true essence. For your convenience, I have listed some of Carol’s products that I thought sounded really interesting – and relevant to my readers. In the future, I will do reviews on them.

Hi Emily, Thanks for your comment — I’m glad you liked the post! I felt inspired by Carol after talking to her, so hopefully that came out in the post. I am very interested to hear what you think about EFT after you look into it. It will be interesting to see how it works for you…maybe you’ll end up training your clients to do EFT for their specific issues. A cool way to add to your business reportoire along with Qi Gong!

One more thing i wanted to comment on is the idea of healing ourselves before we harm our kids. I have wished many a time to be healed rather than passing on my dysfunctions to my kids. A painful process to watch and yet healing is definitely an ongoing process (just wrote about this on my blog).

Hi Heather! Yes, who knows where EFT may take me and how I might incorporate it in my practice… After all, everything happens for a reason, and you introducing me to this may serve a deeper purpose!
As a response to Shera’s comment about healing ourselves before we pass on our dysfunctions to our kids… this is a major point for me when I start thinking about whether I want to have kids. Quite frankly, I am scared to really mess them up. I feel it takes up so much energy just to take care of myself, how could I actually take care of a child (or several!) in addition? On the other hand, it might be a good thing for me to not just think about myself all the time and have other priorities in my life.
I do feel I should be in a more stable space before chosing to have kids. And I sometimes wonder whether I will ever reach that place…

Emily

Hi Shera, thank you for visiting my blog — I appreciate your comments. I am glad to have found your blog as well and plan to take a good look at it! You and Emily have brought up a good point about having kids. Emily, like you, I was afraid to have kids too — although the reason I decided not to was bigger than just having an ED. It was more about not being sure how they’d turn out. My sister was a bit of trouble for me and my parents growing up, so I was afraid I’d have a hard time with a trouble-making child!
In any event, the way Carol described how her awareness grew as a result of having kids was beautiful. At some point, all of us have some awakening — it is that first glimmer that wakes us up and gets us going. For me, it was my health. I started to see signs of my health deteriorating (less energy, skin problems, dry hair, depression) — and I was just not enjoying my life at all. I thought there must be something more than this.
It was actually this blog (and eventually coaching people with ED) that helped me remain committed — every time I think of this blog, of all of you, of the power of love and connecting with others — I feel uplifted. I have a feeling that Carol’s awareness about her kids had some kind of pull to bring her up. For me, the blog was like a purpose beyond myself that kept reminding me to stick to my commitment. For Carol, it was her kids.
Whatever we pick — I think something that moves us to a higher purpose is a great way to awaken and to stay the course. How can we do this? Continue to go deep inside and find out what your true essence is (when you feel right, feel happy, feel at peace) — then work your life & career around that. Soon, I will put my vision exercise on the blog — it was this exercise that helped me start to create what I wanted in my life.
Thanks Emily & Shera for some great comments — a nice way to get me thinking on a Monday morning — I love that!
With love,
Heather

Yes having kids is a real commitment. I sure didn’t feel ready for it (apparently it was meant to happen). I was actively bulimic when i became pregnant back in 2000. I had been back and forth with that of course for years. The day I found out i was pg I stopped purging and smoking. Haven’t done either since (though it has not been easy at times. the past month has been one of the worst with many of my food issues at the forefront – others have to EAT!!, esp dh and he has been eating much, much less than ever and lost a lot of weight – can you say CRAZY – me that is). I have made some changes but the intense control is still there.
I aspire towards a free and easy unschooling life for my two children (now 5 and 2) but I still have much more work to do around that. When my second was born I was a serious chocolate addict and my diet has been back and forth over the years.
WEll I hear one now. Wish you well Emily with whatever you decide about kids. I felt years ago that one may never feel completely ready…

Hi Maya, Wow — thank you so much for your beautiful words — they fill my heart! I am so happy to know that my blog has meant so much to you! I think it’s like the law of attraction, with each sentence I write, I feel my heart overflowing with love — that pours out to all of you — and I am so grateful that it comes back to me through comments like yours!
We all have an abundance of love just waiting for us if we’ll give it and receive it — it’s amazing how much is there for us! I used to think I was not loveable at all — it was a lonely, terrible place to be. I didn’t realize at the time that there was so much love — both within me and out there with you and so many readers! This is what we are all meant to know. Thank you for being the proof, Maya!
With love,

Thank you, Heather. It feels good to hear that. I am so often filled with doubt. Yesterday, I became acutely aware of how much fear I carry around. Especially in this period of my life, where I am about to start a business and take on a HUGE responsibility in providing treatment for people. I definitely wonder: do I really have something to offer? Can I really do this? Am I just a fake, pretending I know something when I don’t? Obviously, I know quite a lot. But is it enough? Am I ready? Yet, I know I could keep studying forever, and probably still wouldn’t feel more ready than I am now.
I picked up Marianne Williamson’s book “The Gift of Change” before going to sleep the other night, and opened it to a random page. The passage I read really hit home for me. She talked about how we need to graduate from “student mode”. She said “It’s time to BECOME the principles now, to embody them and demonstrate them in our daily lives. Until we do, we will not really learn them at the deepest level. They will not inform our souls to transform the world.”
In my case, I need to make this progression literally and figuratively. I have to admit, it is scary! I know I need to just jump into the unknown and TRUST that everything will unfold as it should. I am again reminded of a card from the Osho Zen Tarot set. It is a beautiful card called TRUST. I’d like to share with you the commentary for the card:
“Now is the moment to be a bungee jumper without the cord! And it is this quality for absolute trust, with no reservations or secret safety nets, that the Knight of Water demands from us. There is a tremendous sense of exhilaration if we can take the jump and move into the unkown, even if the idea scares us to death. And when we take trust to the level of the quantum leap, we don’t make any elaborate plans or preparations. We don’t say, ‘Okay, I trust that I know what to do, and I’ll settle my things and pack my suitcase and take it with me.’ No, we just jump, with hardly a thought for what happens next. * The leap is the thing, and the thrill of it as we free-fall through the empty sky. The card gives a hint here, though, about what waits for us at the other end – a soft, welcoming, yummy pink, rose petals, juicy.. c’mon!”
So I will focus on TRUST for the next few days and see what comes up for me.
lots of love!

Emily, you are my inspiration for the trust post that I did. You, who are so intuitive — you have talent beyond what you can even imagine. Just think how you’ll see that talent blossom as you practice in your business! Follow your inner voice — you can trust that — I have seen so much of how this has worked in your life from reading your blog.
I acknowledge you for focusing on trust and I love the quote you left — very beautiful feelings come up when thinking about being a bungee jumper without the cord! If anyone can do this, you can!
WIth love,
Heather
