Have you heard about The Secret? The Secret and law of attraction have been getting a lot of press lately after appearing on Oprah, CNN’s Larry King Live, Extra and many other shows.
I’ve been working with law of attraction for about a year now and it’s been amazing.
It’s nothing new…you may have read similar things many times in the past. The great news is that it’s entering the mainstream little by little, teaching us how to create our ideal lives and finally BE HAPPY!
Here’s a great tip from Michael Neill about The Secret — and also an invitation to listen to his upcoming FREE show on The Gift of Gratitude.
I have been getting Michael Neill’s inspirational newsletter for years — I always read them because they are full of great tips to live your best life. He also has an excellent radio show that you can listen to online at Hay House Radio.

THE SECRET BEHIND “THE SECRET”
“Everything should be made as simple as possible – but no simpler.”
-Albert Einstein
With the movie “The Secret” and books like “Cosmic Ordering” all the rage these days, a whole new cross-section of society is getting interested in attracting their perfect job, perfect partner and perfect bank balance. As a few seem to succeed almost instantaneously while the vast majority seem unable to get what they want no matter how hard they try, a question I’m being asked more and more is “what do I need to change in my
thinking in order for me to get what I want?”
It sounds like a simple enough question, but having explored metaphysics, NLP, mind dynamics and a host of other disciplines in relation to the art and science of success for the past 16 years or so, I think the answer is worthy of a bit of complexity.
There are essentially two schools of thought in relation to getting and having what you want – the school of acquisition and the school of attraction.
The school of acquisition has been the dominant one in Western culture for many years, and its teachings can be summed up in the sentence:
*If you want it, go and get it!*
From the ancient Mongol hordes to the modern titans of business and industry, our society tends to reward and hold up as heroes those men and women who have gone after what they want with enthusiasm and passion. (If they happened to trample a few people on the way to the top, well, it’s unfortunate of course, but those are just the casualties of war.)
On the plus side, graduates of the school of acquisition have helped create ancient and modern empires and contributed tremendous advances in science, medicine, and business; on the down side, they have contributed to a world culture where the strong tend to look down on the weak and wonder why they don’t just get off their lazy behinds, try harder and go and get “it” for themselves.
But while the school of acquisition has been in full session for the past 2500 years or so, the school of attraction has been quietly holding classes in hidden caves and “new thought” churches, its teachings disseminated through secret texts, biblical parables and new age gurus.
The school of attraction teaches:
- Like attracts like
- Thoughts become things
- You become what you think about
These “secret” teachings and principles of attraction were often suppressed by the ruling elite, or so the story goes, because they placed the power within each individual, although the true source of that power is often attributed to God or a benevolent, vibratory universe.
Many of the great men and women throughout history, from ancient religious icons to renaissance men like Leonardo DaVinci and Sir Isaac Newton are known to have studied the ancient texts of the school of attraction.
So now that this “secret” teaching is no longer a secret, why isn’t everybody living the life of their dreams?
Here’s what I believe to be the answer:
*People are attempting to use the principles of attraction as a new set of tools for acquisition.*
Instead of actually shifting the basis of their approach to life to one of planting seeds of kindness, beauty and love and reaping the harvest of a bountiful life, people are attempting to get a better parking space (or indeed a better car, girlfriend or bank balance) by “thinking the right thoughts”.
The problem lies in the reason people want the car, girlfriend or bank balance in the first place – because they believe having what they want will “make” them happy. But a closer looking at the teachings behind “The Secret” reveal that it works the other way around. It is the energy of happiness that attracts the good things into our lives.
Do the principles of attraction really work? In my experience, absolutely. But if you use them to try and manipulate the universe into giving you what you think you need to be happy, you are as likely to manifest frustration and self-doubt as that shiny new husband or loving automobile.
With love,
Michael

A great book from a psychologist experienced in healing addictions (who broke away from “heavy” traditional therapy techniques) uses very similar principles to law of attraction: The Serenity Principle by Joseph Bailey. Thank you Heather for sharing this with us, it made so much sense as I was reading through it. It is all in perfect order and makes perfect sense. How have you acquired this new way of thinking in your life? Was it difficult to make the change? … And one last curious question.. What role does the enivornment play in affluencing and shaping our lives and our thinking? Do you have any recommendatios for handling our environement ( specifically speaking – people)?
Much love,
Sarah

I went to a seminar on this last spring. I think I’ve mentioned this to you before, but Robert and Michelle Colt teach this and they’re amazing. I recently went back to one of their free seminars, which they are offering in both NYC and LA now. I also just bought The Secret. Felt like it would be a good refresher for me.

Hi Sarah, Great questions! I have never really wanted “things” much. When I grew up, I noticed that my mother seemed to have this gift for creating a beautiful home on so little money it was as if magic happened. And we had low-budget cars that we kept forever!
So I never really seemed to value “things.” I DID however, feel like I needed to accumulate money out of fear — financial insecurity. I felt like I had to keep making money and saving it for some unknown doom.
When I learned about law of attraction, the money and increasing job status lost all of its value for me. I never played the parking lot space games with it.
The first thing I focused on attracting was my VISION. My initial vision (about 4 years ago) was to attract my house and lifestyle in Saba. The house is a thing, for sure. Although why I wanted it was different from having something…I wanted to live in a crime-free, beautiful place where there was little to do and much to BE.
Even more than that, I focused on creating a LIFESTYLE. A gentle, flowing, peaceful one in which I did work that came from my heart and loved every minute of it. Of course that meant leaving my corporate job and finding a whole new career…and trusting it was possible.
Focusing on that 3 times per day, it showed up in a year. That’s when I really started believing in law of attraction.
My second vision was just about how I wanted to BE. My vision was short and all about how I wanted to FEEL. There was no thing, no having involved in that vision at all. This was when I finally let go of the fears that were limiting me the most. Achieving this vision was my greatest accomplishment and means more than any financial security, place or thing.
I still work on this vision because my energy has habits and if I find myself slipping into negative thinking, this vision brings me back to what’s important.
Over the past year, I did start to focus on my business being successful though. Mostly, I was attracting ideal clients whom I loved to work with and who’d get a lot of value from working with me. I began to attract knowing my worth and receiving it.
This worked really well, but I got busy and forgot that second vision I just mentioned!!!
So to stay balanced, I am going back to my vision about how I want to FEEL. This is my barameter for my success in life…more than anything I could have or own!
Thanks for stopping by, Sarah — as always, you have awesome questions!
I am going to answer your question about environment in a few posts based on a recent experience I had taking yoga teacher training…it was a greuling experience in many ways and taught me a lot about how to deal with negativity, stress and sleep deprivation! More soon.

Heather

Hi PTC, I’m so glad you stopped by and reminded me about Robert and Michelle Colt. I’ll be on the lookout for their seminars — they sound wonderful!
You’d love the I Can Do It conference that Louise Hay puts on…all kinds of great stuff like this there. I’m going to go to the one in Las Vegas this year….want to come? It would be a nice central meeting location for East and West Coast bloggers!
I’ve missed you and your blog…I’m starting to get back into the game, slowly! My yoga teacher training program ends next week and I’ll be able to sleep later than 4:50 am for the first time in months!

Heather

Hi PTC, Bummer that we won’t be in Vegas at the same time! Let me know what you think of it though. I went once for a long weekend for work. The company we were visiting picked us up in a limo, took us to dinner and a couple bars afterwards…so all I rememeber was the inside of the limo and the places we went…not as much fun as walking around and experiencing the city!!!
I DID see the water/musci show at the hotel Bellagio, which was worth seeing. Then they took us to see Cirque de Soleil, which was great too. So no complaints!
Are you going to get to have some fun there? There’s a place where you can get low priced tickets for shows on the same day. Here’s some info:
You can also visit the Showcase mall next to the MGM Grand and go to the Tickets 2 Night desk where they have reasonably priced tickets to major shows around town. They can be reached at 888-4TIX2NITE (484-9264).
Try Tix4tonight at any of their locations on the strip. Next to the Harley Davidson Café, next to the Peppermill across the street from the Stardust or at the Fashion Show Mall. They usually have half price same day tickets for many of the Las Vegas shows and attractions.
With love,
Heather
