What would it be like to take some time out for yourself? Some time to focus on your health, your needs and your dreams? I would like you to join me in a celebration of Spring Cleaning – to clean out what is cluttering up our lives and focus on committing to our health! Next week will kick off a week long series of posts getting us ready for our own spring cleaning — do it at your own pace! Make sure to tune in for the interviews with experts, who’ve walked our path and share their wisdom!

What Is Spring Cleaning Weekend?
This is not just about doing chores around the house — although this is how we typically think of spring cleaning. We can look at anything with a negative or a positive perspective, so let’s look at winter first – and then move to spring. From a negative perspective, we can see winter as a time of being cold, dark, miserable and home bound (for those who live in cold climates!). From a positive perspective, winter is a natural time of rest, reflection and rejuvenation. It is a time to allow our bodies to slow down, de-stress and enjoy quiet activities.

In the spring, if we’ve honored the cycles of nature and our body’s need for rest, we emerge with energy and excitement. This energy and increasing light can motivate us to clean out the old and make room for the new in our lives. This is where the energy and motivation for spring cleaning came about from years gone by. We can do the same type of spring cleaning for our mind, body and spirit – with only a small investment of time!

Detoxify Body, Mind & Spirit
In Chinese medicine, spring is the season of the wood element, corresponding to the liver and gall bladder — and it’s the liver that cleanses in the spring. The liver is our body’s toxin processing powerhouse – pulling toxins from our bodies. If you’ve read my posts on our second brain – or enteric nervous system, you know that it has as many neurotransmitters as the brain in our head – and that the two communicate in ways scientists don’t yet fully understand. For this reason, it’s no surprise that toxic thoughts and feelings can impact our health. Anger, depression, fear and repressed emotions can end up lodged in our gut – specifically our liver.

For this reason, I’d like to ask you to join me in a celebration of spring cleaning – where we can release our mind, body and spirit from thoughts, feelings and habits that no longer serve us. This event will take place in our own homes – or wherever you will be – next weekend – from Friday, May 26th – Monday, May 29th. This is Memorial Day weekend for those of us in the US, so it may end up being a busy weekend with family. If this is true for you, consider taking one day – or even half a day, to focus just on yourself. Perhaps if you have a day off to yourself, you can use it to select one of the activities below and invest time in your own spring cleaning!

Options for Spring Cleaning
There is so much to choose from! Stay tuned over the next week and I will bring you posts that will help us prepare for our upcoming weekend of celebration!

  • Perspectives – identifying those that no longer serve your well-being and choosing new, empowering perspectives.
  • Food – identifying foods that are triggers of disordered eating or create body or mood sensitivities and selecting foods that ground, nourish and satisfy your body & mind.
  • Habits – identifying habits that keep you stuck and selecting new habits that will move you toward your ideal picture of yourself, your true essence.
  • Cleansing – paying attention to your digestive system and learning techniques to help heal from toxic overload.
  • Exercise – identifying a fitness plan that fits your mood, body and life.
  • Self-care – identifying self-care routines that you can use whether you have 5 minutes or 5 days.
