Christine Kane is a singer, songwriter — and from reading about her background, a real modern-day renaissance woman. Whether she is writing, speaking or performing her music, Christine is definitely gifted, based on what I’ve read so far. I found Christine’s blog because of the entries she did on her recovery from bulimia. She writes eloquently about recovery and promises to share more of her experiences with us. - Byron Katie’s The Work
This is an excellent blog from Byron Katie, who created “The Work,” which is an inquiry process involving 4 simple questions that can change the way we look at life. I really like The Work because it reminds us that we often get caught up in our story about life and miss the joy of life entirely. Going through the 4 questions helps me remember what’s important — and focus on joyful, positive things that serve my true essence. Byron Katie’s blog is excellent because you can watch videos and read transcripts of people going through these 4 questions.

This is an excellent interview with Dr. Calloway, who specializes in eating disorders. Finally, some good information on what happens to your body in recovery! Body Repair Resources - More and more people recovering from eating disorders are learning that their bodies have biochemical reactions to foods, just as alcoholics have biochemical reactions to alcohol. I encourage you to read about alternative health and body repair eating plans as a part of your recovery. Most mainstream doctors — and even nutritionists — don’t know about these issues, so it’s important to be as informed as possible so that you can make the best decisions for your own recovery.
- The Body Ecology Diet
Donna Gates’ world renowned system of healing the body’s inner ecosystem. This is the healing system that ended my need to binge & purge and cured my digestive distress. Donna’s website has articles and other good information about the diet.
- Kay Sheppard, M.A., is the author of the best-selling Food Addiction: The Body Knows. A licensed mental health counselor and certified eating disorders specialist, she conducts workshops for food addicts worldwide. Her most recent book is Food Addiction: Healing Day by Day – Daily Affirmations, published by Health Communications, Inc.
I have heard from recovered binge eaters that Kay’s plan works for them. It has some similarities to Donna’s Body Ecology Diet, although I feel a greater sense of freedom with the Body Ecology Diet because I don’t have to weigh & measure my food. On the Body Ecology Diet, my appetite is regulated by a healthy digetstive system — so my mind is free to enjoy the meal, rather than weighing everything. I also think that the BED focuses more on repairing what went wrong, while Kay’s plan seems to focus more on abstinence. The important thing to note is that it does work for people, so follow your intuition and experiment!
- Health Recovery Systems
This website is based on information from the book Seven Weeks to Sobriety, by Joan Mathews Larson, Ph.D. It includes a good description of what happens to the body when an addictivie substance, like alcohol or certain foods, are eaten. It also describes how chemicals and other lifestyle habits impact the addictive process.
- The Specific Carbohydrate Diet
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is a strict grain-free, lactose-free, and sucrose-free dietary regimen intended for those suffering from Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac Disease, IBD, and IBS. The SCD was developed by Dr. Sydney Valentine Haas, and is described in his book, “The Management of Celiac Disease”. Elaine Gottschall’s daughter was saved by the SCD, causing Elaine to further research the diet and to describe it in further detail in her own book, “Breaking The Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet”.
- Westin A. Price Foundation
I found this website after a referral from Donna Gates. It supports many of her principles in The Body Ecology Diet. The Weston A. Price Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charity founded in 1999 to disseminate the research of nutrition pioneer Dr. Weston Price, whose studies of isolated nonindustrialized peoples established the parameters of human health and determined the optimum characteristics of human diets. Dr. Price’s research demonstrated that humans achieve perfect physical form and perfect health generation after generation only when they consume nutrient-dense whole foods and the vital fat-soluble activators found exclusively in animal fats.

- The Hale Clinic – UK
Teresa Hale created a very interesting clinic in London that uses alternative health professionals in healing eating disorders. Some of the treatment program reflects the avenues I took in my recovery and I find The Hale Clinic’s approach very interesting (naturopathy, Chinese Medicine, bioenergetics, colonics, food allergy management, self-care, yoga, therapy, etc.). If you don’t live near London, take a look at my post Eating Disorders – It’s Not All In Your Head, to see what I did to create my own team of health professionals for recovery.

- Dr. Mercola - an osteopathic physician, also known as a DO. DOs are complete physicians who, along with MDs, are licensed to prescribe medication and perform surgery in all 50 states. But DOs bring something extra to the practice of medicine. Osteopathic physicians practice a “whole person” approach to medicine, treating the entire person rather that just the symptoms. With a focus on preventive health care, DOs help patients develop attitudes and lifestyles that don’t just fight illness, but help prevent it, too. It is my vision to transform the existing medical paradigm from one addicted to pharmaceuticals, surgeries and other methods that only conceal or remove specific symptoms – with morbid results to our health and economy — to one focused on treating and preventing the underlying causes.
